As part of our Mindshare Monthly project we recently asked our members about what they add to their daily routines to bring them joy. They shared a wide variety of wonderful answers, but one really stood out to us; chit-chat! We’re especially fond of this answer since most of us at Workhaus experience it everyday. Some of you mentioned talking with friends, some mentioned family, and some mentioned the conversations they have with their Community Leads. We loved this suggestion so much that today we have a whole article for you about the value of chit-chat and finding time to connect.
Why it Matters: The Science of Social Connections in Workspaces
Research shows that creating social connections is important to our mental and physical health, helping us to live longer, healthier lives. One study specifically showed the uplifting, albeit distracting effects of chit-chat in the office. To mitigate the distraction factor while still reaping the positive effects, we recommend trying to find time to chit-chat when you’re not in the middle of something. Other studies have shown that taking short breaks is good for you, so try stepping away from what you’re working on for a few minutes every now and then, and make the most of your environment by striking up a conversation.
For those of us who have remote or hybrid jobs, we understand that finding ways to connect can be hard when you’re in the office less often;; but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible! We recently shared a few ideas to help hybrid workers stay connected with their teammates. Another idea for our remote and hybrid friends to try is the 8 minute phone call. And of course, when you are in the office, say hello to your teammates, office neighbors, and your Community Lead.
Even in the midst of a busy or hectic day, a sprinkling of casual conversation can go a long way. While it’s true that taking a break to chit-chat can increase productivity, not everything is about work all the time. What we love most about finding the time to talk with our teammates and coworking members alike is the increased sense of connection and belonging. The sense of community is a major perk of coworking spaces, compared to traditional office environments.
At Workhaus, our coworking spaces are designed to foster communication and collaboration. As a team we strive to stay connected to each other and those in our community; a goal that’s at the heart of everything that we do! From sharing Friday wins to self-care Wednesdays, or dropping a line in our slack channels, we believe that communication makes the world go ‘round! This is what we have in mind when we host various daytime socials in our locations, giving everyone a chance to step out of their offices and take a moment to enjoy snacks, drinks, and the company of their coworking neighbors.
Not every conversation in the office has to be focused around professional networking. General chit-chat can allow us to learn about each other on a personal level. We can learn about places nearby that we might enjoy or things happening in our respective communities, be it the office, neighborhood, or across the city. We can even learn tips, tricks, or about new resources that may lead us to new skills or help us improve in different ways!
Breaking the Ice at Work: Conversation Starters for Coworking
For the introverts among us, striking up a conversation can be challenging, but it’s more than often worthwhile! To break the ice, you can always start with a simple compliment or observation, followed up with a question. “I love your bag, where did you get it?” Or, since you’re at the office anyway, try “What kind of work do you do?” Casual conversation starters like “How was your weekend?” or “Have you seen any good movies lately?” are also a great start.
It doesn’t have to be super unique, but a little bit of creativity will usually get you further than mentioning the weather. Don’t forget that practicing active listening skills like making eye contact and asking questions goes a long way. And if you’re stuck, you can always check in with your Community Lead! They’re always happy to introduce you to other members.
Keep the Conversation Going with Workhaus
Remember, these interactions, no matter how brief, remind us that we are part of a community and that we are not alone in our day-to-day challenges. So, why not take a few minutes to connect with your team over lunch, strike up a conversation by the coffee machine, or swing by the front desk next time you’re at the office and chat with your on-site Community Lead! Grab a free granola bar, say hello, and chat about your weekend, your latest project, or that new show on Netflix that has you glued to your screen! Why not step outside your comfort zone and strike up a conversation with someone new this week? We could all use a moment to stop and connect.
