Haus Tips

Have you set any world records for not moving while working from home? I know I’ve come close since considering that everything is beside me or, at the very least, only steps away inside the house. I’m comfortable and getting work done, so why should I move if I don’t have to?

The problem here is that even though we’ve been told to stay home as much as possible, it’s  important we don’t forget about our physical health. When at the office we’re more likely to move more throughout the day – commuting to work, getting up and talking to others, and even going on a lunchtime walk to get away from the hustle and bustle of work.

With nicer weather on its way and some extra time on our hands, now is a great time to get up and get running or some other form of cardio to keep ourselves moving. If you’re not used to any form of serious exercise outside of walking around the office, starting to run, walk, or bike as a hobby is (at first!) difficult. It takes time to get used to the new movements and establish your endurance. It’s common to feel sore, tired, and like you’re never going to be able to reach whatever goal you’ve set for yourself.

Fortunately, there are many great apps out there designed to help motivate you to build a workout routine. Here are a few that we’ve found work well:

1) Nike Run Club

Leave it to Nike to design a great app for running. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, the Nike Run app has features for you. The app offers guided runs which help you stay focused, motivated, and moving. There are even slower pace options like “Running on Empty” which is perfect if you’ve already had a busy day at work or with your kids. If you have any long term goals, you can also enter these so the app can help track your progress.

2) Spotify & Running Playlists

If you have a Spotify account, you can access a ton of great playlists for your run, walk, or bike ride no matter what your pace is. In the ‘running’ genre, you’ll find playlists with music designed to motivate you and keep you moving. In fact, some playlists only include tracks that follow a specific number of BPM (beats per minute).

3) Charity Miles

If you want to run and help make a difference too (and who wouldn’t during these trying times?), an app called Charity Miles is perfect for you. The app sends a small donation to a non-profit organization of your choice for every mile you run, walk, or bike. Over time you can track your workouts and see how much money you’ve managed to donate.

4) Zombies, Run

Can you only run if you’re stricken with fear? If yes, then this app is for you! With this app, you’re transported into a zombie apocalypse where you’re one of a few surviving humans (think Walking Dead-style). All you have to do is run to collect supplies, rescue people, and try not to come across a zombie in the process. The app tracks your speed, distance, and other important information about how you’re doing.

While it’s important to stay inside and practice physical distancing, you also need to take care of your physical health. These apps will help you do just that and your body will thank you!
