At Workhaus, we believe a great workspace doesn’t begin and end at the office door. One of the greatest advantages of working from our coworking space in Kitchener is the vibrant neighbourhood that surrounds it.
For freelancers, startups, remote workers, and growing companies looking for office space in Kitchener-Waterloo, location matters. Whether you’re using a coworking desk, a small private office, or a day pass for a workspace, you aren’t just getting a place to work, you’re plugging into the energy of Downtown Kitchener (DTK).
DTK offers something you simply can’t replicate in a suburban office park. Here, you’re surrounded by cafés, restaurants, public transit, and a thriving local community. The nearby ION light rail makes commuting simple, and almost everything you need during the workday is within walking distance.
Right next door to Workhaus is the historic Kitchener Market; arguably the crown jewel of downtown Kitchener. For more than 100 years, the market has been a gathering place for the community. On Saturdays, the building fills with farmers, bakers, artisans, and thousands of visitors coming through for the weekly farmers’ market.
But the market isn’t just a Saturday destination. From Tuesday to Saturday, the indoor food hall is open with a rotating lineup of restaurants serving everything from international street food to fresh baked goods. For many of our members, it’s their go-to lunch spot during the workday.
The market also hosts cooking workshops, community classes, and special events throughout the year. In the summer months, the outdoor piazza often features live music, evening programming, and even Latin dance nights where people gather to dance under the lights. There’s often a bar set up outside during events, food vendors serving late, and an atmosphere that spills right out into the neighbourhood.
Workhaus members already have premium coffee and tea included inside the space. But one of the perks of working in DTK is the ability to explore the neighbourhood whenever you want a change of scenery. Whether it’s 30 seconds from our doors or a short 10 minute walk, there are some fantastic coffee spots nearby.
Zazu Coffee Bar is a new favourite for strong espresso and fast caffeine runs. Plus, you can grab a small bouquet of flowers for that special someone. Coffee lovers across the region also rave about Lucero Canteen, which many people consider to serve the best coffee in Waterloo Region.
For a relaxed café atmosphere and excellent pastries, Cafe Clementina is another new, local favourite. Or if you’re in the mood for something sweet, Golden Hearth Bakery is known for its incredible baked goods and creative treats. Next door to Workhaus you’ll find Nova Era Bakery, a Portuguese bakery that’s always stocked with pastries and perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up.
These quick coffee and snack walks are a small but meaningful part of what makes working downtown so enjoyable.
When lunchtime hits, the hardest part of your day is deciding where to go.
The number one most popular lunch spot among members is Banh Mi Givral Deli. It’s a local institution known for incredible Vietnamese sandwiches and the prices are hard to beat. You can grab a sandwich and a few spring rolls for about $10, which makes it a favourite for regular lunch runs.
Right next door to the office, you’ll find Eby Street Bodega. This tiny but mighty spot serving creative sandwiches, snacks, and specialty grocery items.
For breakfast or brunch meetings, The Yeti Cafe is one of the top-rated breakfast and brunch spots in Waterloo Region. It’s practically at our doorstep.
Beyond that, the neighbourhood is packed with hidden gems. Korean fried chicken across the street, an incredible pupuseria up Eby Street, and new spots opening regularly as the area develops.
One of the perks of working downtown is how easily the workday can turn into a social evening. When the laptops close for the day, there are plenty of great places within walking distance to grab dinner or drinks with coworkers or clients.
Rose Cafe has quickly become a favourite gathering spot with its trademark pink walls, great vibes, and middle-eastern influenced menu.
For cocktails and a lively atmosphere, Grand Surf Lounge brings a fun tropical energy to the neighbourhood.
Tapas lovers should check out La Lola Tapas Bar, perfect for catching up and sharing small plates after work.
You’ll also find a handful of long-standing neighbourhood institutions. The Grand Trunk Saloon and one of the most talked-about restaurants in the region and Odd Duck Wine & Provisions, which was recently acknowledged by the Michelin Guide.
It’s one of the reasons why people working in Kitchener enjoy being based downtown; you’re never far from something great to do after work!
Another reason we love being located here is how active the neighbourhood is.
The City of Kitchener and Downtown Kitchener BIA organize events, programming, and festivals throughout the year. This brings a lively energy and pulse to the city core. Food trucks, live music, street festivals, and community events regularly transform downtown into a destination.
From indoor winter activations to food festivals and outdoor markets, there’s almost always something happening nearby. Last year we participated in the Far East Asian Night Market. This incredible event featured food vendors, live performances, and thousands of visitors which will be returning again in 2026.
When your office is in DTK, the neighbourhood becomes part of your workspace.
Your workday naturally develops a rhythm: coffee runs between meetings, quick lunches with coworkers, stepping out for fresh air at the market, or grabbing a drink after work with your team. You’ll discover a downtown full of independent businesses, incredible food, and a community of people building and doing exciting things.
Whether you’re looking for day passes for coworking, shared desks, or small private offices in Kitchener, being in the heart of downtown means you get the best of both worlds: a productive workspace and an incredible neighbourhood right outside the door. We’re proud to call it home.
