Workhaus Social Recap: Cinco de Mayo

Friday night, Workhaus pulled out all the stops for our Cinco de Mayo party. Let’s lay it out for you – not only was our bar stocked to make the perfect margarita, but we also had snacks on snacks and a live DJ playing old and new school hits.

The lounge of our Commerce Court location turned into a dance floor as members took turns making song request to dance the night away. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the party moved downstairs as we took over the bar at the Walrus Pub & Beet Hall. Tbh, that place has become a Workhaus staple. Pretty sure they all know us there.While we had a great time toasting our drinks all night long, it’s important to know why Cinco de Mayo exists, and why it’s a meaningful celebration.

On May 5th 1862, the Battle of Puebla took place in Mexico near Puebla City. This was during the second French intervention in Mexico where their larger army stood to win. But this battle did not end in their favour; instead, the Mexican army was able to defeat them against all odds.

Because of this, Cinco de Mayo (translated to the Fifth of May) is an annual celebration held on May 5th to commemorate the historic victory. While Mexico and the French continued to have a tenuous relationship after the battle, Puebla acted as momentous moment in Mexico’s history.

Over the years, Cinco de Mayo has turned into a positive celebration of food, music, and dance with friends, and Workhaus was happy to spend it with our friends.If it weren’t for our members, Workhaus wouldn’t be what it is today.
