“IT’S VERY HARD TO EXPLAIN WHAT MY COMPANY IS DOING. IT’S A VERY NICHE INDUSTRY. EVEN HOW I GOT INVOLVED IS VERY NICHE.”

Challenge accepted.Meet Sam Shi, a coder for Axon VetCare Technologies Corp., also known as Kovo. They have created a mobile app used to track the annual health records surrounding racehorses.

The world of horse racing is a massive industry, and with everything riding on the horses (see what we did there?), their safety and health is of the utmost importance. After all, they’re the stars of the show.

What does the app do? It allows the medical teams to collaborate and share information in order to provide better support for the animals well being.

How did Sam’s path lead to Axon VetCare? Last December, Health TO (Toronto’s health tech community) held a networking event for companies with specific interest in healthcare technology. Eager to make connections, Sam quickly signed up for the event, not knowing that it would catapult his career. He got an interview with Axon VetCare, and the rest is history.

If there’s one piece of advice Sam can leave behind, it’s that there’s a networking event for everyone. Regardless of how niche their interests may be. When he moved to Canada, Sam didn’t know where to begin, so having the opportunity to pass on his knowledge and experience has been an honour.
